"In this enthralling novel that intertwines the plot with actual historical events, mixed-race Damián Zarebski is despised and bullied in an Argentinian town during the second half of the 19th century. He eventually comes to occupy a position of relative respect in the community; from that position he expeccts to be able to seek revenge for all the ills that befell him at the hands of the powerful in his youth, but the outcome is not exactly what he foresaw.
Initially the narration seems to focus on the Christ-like figure of Damián as the victim in a Manichean struggle, but as his story progresses we come to realize his path is headed into grayer areas of existence. The stereotypical “noble savage†abandons his mythical features, but underhandedly, to vindicate his sense of justice when faced with his impotence against a relentlessly cruel society.
The novel, narrated lineally and in the third person, is a compelling study of the effects of physical violence and mental abuse on the psychosexual development of a child in a hetero-normative atmosphere. Damián is threatened with and becomes the target of attempts at rape by the children of the wealthy, in one instance with the encouragement of the father of two of the victimizers. Hence Damián’s sexual intimacy with females will be characterized by manipulation and insincere opportunism more than as instances of tenderness or love. Damián comes to satisfy his appetite on one occasion in a shockingly twisted manner.
In terms of the effect of harassment and bullying on the basis of unforgiving racism and classicism, the story could have just as well been set anywhere int he world and in the present, which invests this amazingly topical novel with universalism.
Now we just have to wait for its English translation1"
