Leonard Maltin 2013 Movie Guide The Modern Era Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Leonard Maltin 9780452298545 Books Reviews
- I have always been a fan of being able to hold in my hand an encyclopedia of movie data and reviews and lists of movies for certain actors, actresses and directors. I do use IMDB often, but still like to have a book handy. The good about Leonard Maltin's 2013 Movie Guide - The Modern Era version is that it is smaller (dimension wise) than the book used to be several years ago, but it does not have reviews for any movies prior to 1965, hence the Modern Era added onto the name. It also seemed like other movies that were made between 1965 and 2013 were missing that should have been included (and not small, unknown, independent movies.) The "Index of Stars" is still in the back of the book, listing every movie that well known actors or actress like Jimmy Stewart, Harrison Ford, or Sandra Bullock have been in. I greatly miss the directors list in the back of the book, that used to list all movies by all of the well known directors, past and present.
- Got this for my college-age girl, who wants to make movies.
It's the bomb as far as these books go, and it's as big as one. Maltin's web presence, as far as I can tell, is ... lacking. By now this is certainly by design, since they're not going to give it away.
A few years back they separated out the "Classic" years (pre-1965, I think) and they update *that* one every 3-4 years. This one comes out every year, but you really only need to buy *it* every 3-4 years, as well, before you'll be lacking information you might want.
The paragraphs aren't much -- the book is a mile wide and an inch deep, as far as that calculation goes -- but his information is (literally) encyclopedic. And his personal comments are fun.
Of course he's got a writer for the heavy lifting, and no doubt a slew of, or at least a few, research assistants. But if you buy it -- and then read Roger Ebert's regular web reviews (and wanderings as well, for that matter), you'll be covered. Hardly ever do you need to click over to IMDB, unless you want to delve deeper.
I should also mention my Da swears by this (and occasionally no doubt *at it*. Ba-dum-bum.) and has read it for decades, along with taking his own notes on the many, many, many movies he watches. In a sort of chiasma, or at least the reverse of what I've done here, while I the father bought it for my daughter ... *his* daughter (my sister) buys it for *him*.
At $10, which it was when I bought it, and replaced, say, every couple years, you're talking a penny a day, for his thoughts.
I'll buy that. - This is an invaluable resource for movies. Maltin has outstanding taste when it comes to movies. You might not always agree with them, but he does know what he is talking about. His rating go from BOMB (his lowest) to *1/2 all the way up to ****. If he gives it that high a rating-SEE IT! He usually reserves that for classics. He gave Speed ***1/2 and a great review and loved it. He also gave its sequel a BOMB, a horrible review, and obviously hated it. That's the way he frequently works. On the other hand, he gave Cellular **1/2 and a decent review, which was what I probably would have given it, as he did with other movies like The Big Year. Some reviews surprised me that he gave it as low (he gave Mr. Deeds a BOMB and trashed it) or as high (he gave That's My Boy **) as he did. I call the **1/2 and a decent review his "Cellular Review"-if it's at least that it's worth seeing. Get this if you want good taste from an outstanding and experienced critic who knows what he's talking about.
- Leonard Maltin in book form is a standard reference and needs no recommendation. My problem was with the kindle version - I could not work out a way of finding the movie about which I wanted to read. For example, a search for "Gone With the Wind" yielded three pages of references, but not one one was about the film itself. Using the book version gave the title in a few seconds. It's possible there is an effective method of searching for titles but I could not achieve it. Perhaps kindle does not lend itself to easy reference, or perhaps there is a way which I have not discovered. Prospective purchasers need to keep this in mind and work out how to use the kindle version before buying.
- I have been collecting films for over twenty years. I started buying a Maltin Movie Guide every year or two because I quickly discovered several things Checking the reviews in the Guide before purchasing a dvd prevented me from wasting money and time on films I would not enjoy. Dramas (rated 3 stars or better) and comedies (rated 2 and a half stars or better) with encouraging reviews are usually enjoyable for one who seriously appreciates film media. I have had few major disagreements with their staff of reviewers. They occasionally add touches of humor to the reviews, which liven up the criticism.
- It's good, but with each new edition he removes reviews that were in earlier editions. Sometimes it says something like "followed by a made for tv sequel" and the sequel isn't reviewed. Now that this is an ebook, there's no reason to still delete reviews for space reasons. Also, he should re-visit movies more often that have been subject to critical reevaluation in the years since he wrote his review, or at least acknowledge it. Ishtar, for example.
- I love movies so much and this is one way to validate my impressions....I generally make my own conclusions before I consult the book...however, some I see on television I want to know something about them to decide if I really want to buy it......a great source book plus it has a section about actors and actresses and the movies they have been it. It also rates movies.....so it is worth the cost....
- I have bought several editions of Maltin's movie guide, which I think is one of the best. This is the first time I have bought the version, and I would not do so again. It takes much longer to look up a movie than with the paper version. I think the e-reader format is not really suitable for reference books or guidebooks, although it is great for novels, etc.
